Redefining In-Home Care Through Human Connection and Innovation

How did Kira Tewalt’s personal caregiving experience shape the founding of Philia Home Care?

Kira Tewalt’s personal experience with home care marked the beginning of Philia Home Care’s story. During her teenage years, her grandfather came to live with her family, offering her an early window into the realities of senior caregiving. Although her family ensured he received attentive support, she observed how frequently home care can drift toward tasks instead of meaningful connections.

This insight, combined with her long-standing commitment to improving the lives of older adults, led to the creation of Philia Home Care—an award-winning home care agency in Washington, DC.

How does relationship-driven caregiving influence daily interactions between caregivers and clients?

Philia is built around three core commitments: safety, health and overall well-being. The agency sees relationship-driven care not as a luxury, but as the foundation for achieving these outcomes. When trust is present, care becomes proactive, personalized and more effective.

“Home care should never feel transactional. When someone invites us into their home, we treat that as a relationship—not an assignment,” says Tewalt, founder.

Caregivers engage clients through personalized activities—whether encouraging gentle movement with a balloon toss or supporting cognitive stimulation through art and conversation. Each interaction is tailored to the individual’s interests, history and abilities. These moments build trust and consistency.

Why does Philia prioritize empathy and interpersonal connection during caregiver recruitment?

The philosophy also guides its recruitment and training practices. In the hiring process, technical competence is weighed alongside empathy and compassion. During interviews, candidates are asked not only what they did for past clients, but also how they connected with them. Only individuals with strong interpersonal instincts are hired. From orientation onward, caregivers are supported through targeted training and guided to strengthen gaps in technical skills.

That emphasis on connection and support has led to unusually strong caregiver retention. Many Philia caregivers have been with the agency since its early years—a rarity in an industry known for high turnover. For clients, this continuity translates into deeper trust, greater consistency and safer, more personalized care over time.

Philia’s trained, compassionate caregivers turn skill and persistence into meaningful outcomes for those they serve. One client who had become discouraged about her mobility regained the ability to walk independently after steady encouragement and guided exercises. Stories like this reflect Philia’s commitment not only to safety and health but to restoring confidence and overall well-being.

How does the Find Your Independence platform expand access to affordable home care?

Affordability is another area where many families hit a wall when seeking in-home care services. Increasing labor costs and limited insurance coverage leave middle-class households without feasible care options. Many families find themselves caught between Medicaid ineligibility and private-pay rates, facing a challenging gap where essential care is needed but financially out of reach.

To address this, Philia is launching a new software platform, Find Your Independence, currently in beta testing. The platform introduces a registry-style model that allows families to hire vetted caregivers directly while maintaining professional oversight. By simplifying how care is arranged and monitored, it helps families remain engaged while preserving continuity and dignity for those receiving support. The agency maintains oversight to ensure consistent standards of care, while families or designated contacts manage service schedules.

Unlike informal hiring marketplaces, the platform centralizes care management. Care plans are created within the system, communication occurs through an integrated chat feature, and caregivers clock in using a geolocated system. The system also allows caregivers to log completed tasks and leave notes for the family, creating end-to-end transparency and accountability.

Whether through traditional in-home services or its emerging platform, Philia keeps the focus squarely on the person receiving care—protecting safety, supporting health and strengthening overall well-being as needs evolve over time. Being named the Most Recommended Home Care Agency for 2026 reflects Philia’s unwavering commitment to helping older adults remain independent, respected and connected.
